Mandarin robo-callers have recently been bombarding many places in the U.S. with phone calls where there is a large Chinese immigrant population. So much so, that the New York Police Department has lately even wound up on their call list. NYPD officers have vigorously been investigating the robocalls in New York City after receiving many of them on a daily basis.
Non-Mandarin speakers who these robocalls have targeted are a big nuisance to them. But the problem is that many Chinese immigrants have fallen for the robocall’s prompted scams. Recently a 65-year-old Chinese woman got in contact with the NYPD and said that she was scammed out of almost $1.3 million, so the problem is quite serious.
The phone caller tells the intended victim that there is an important document that needs to be picked-up and it could affect their current immigration status in the states. Then it directs them to press a button to speak with a specialist, which brings them to a live scammer who then takes the scam to the next level. That person then pretends to be a courier company, claiming that a package addressed to the caller is connected to a big criminal case.
The phone call is then transferred to a fake police officer who claims the money is involved in a laundering investigation and that the caller needs to transfer money to a Hong Kong bank account in order for the police to solve the case.
